Cameron Munster, contract, Storm, Roosters, Dolphins, future, transfers

Greg Alexander believes Cameron Munster is more of a priority signing for the Storm than the three spine players they have already locked down on big money extensions.

The Storm negotiated long-term deals for Ryan Papenhuyzen, Jahrome Hughes and Harry Grant on contracts reportedly around the $1 million a season mark.

However, Munster who is off-contract at the end of 2023, was initially offered a lesser contract reportedly worth around 750,000 a season, which he rejected.

The Storm have since upped their offer to a three-year extension with a price bump, but there are no shortage of clubs circling the Maroons and Kangaroos five-eighth.

Since he rejected Melbourne’s first offer, Munster has been linked to the Dolphins, Bulldogs, Broncos and most recently and sensationally the Roosters.

The Dolphins loom as Melbourne’s biggest threat because they have the room in their salary cap to offer Munster the most lucrative deal and he also has a close relationship with former Queensland coach Wayne Bennett from the 2020 Origin series win.

Munster also has history with the Broncos after joining their academy as a youngster before moving to the Storm and he has a relationship with Kevin Walters, who gave him his debut in Origin.

However, the bombshell rumours of the Roosters trying to offload Luke Keary, Angus Crichton and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves to make room for the Queensland five-eighth shook up the Munster sweepstakes.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson and Munster’s management have denied the reports, but that won’t stop the conspiracy theorists speculating until he signs his next contract.

The Roosters have form in luring Sonny Bill Williams, Cooper Cronk and most recently Brandon Smith to the club out of, which were all signings that came out of nowhere.

Alexander believes the Storm can’t afford to lose Munster to any rival if they want to keep winning premierships over the next few seasons.

“Watching the Melbourne Storm beat the Dragons over the weekend, and they’ve tied up Papenhuyzen, Jahrome Hughes and Harry Grant, three outstanding players but if you took Munster out of that Melbourne side, that’s a completely different outfit,” Alexander said on The Fox League Podcast.
