Syvilla Wirth Obituary (2/1/1944 – 4/15/2022) – Mystic, CT

Mystic – Syvilla “Dede” (Tully) Wirth, 78, of Mystic, died April 15, 2022, at Westerly Hospital. Born Feb. 1, 1944, in Providence, RI, she was the daughter of the late Dr. William and Syvilla (Hall) Tully. Dede went to school at Elmhurst Academy of the Sacred Heart where she graduated in 1962. Dede continued her studies at Rhode Island College with a degree in education and obtained her teaching certificates in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Virginia. She taught English at Hope High School in Providence, RI

Dede married the love of her life Bernard J. Wirth Dec. 20, 1969, and they spent 45 wonderful years together before Bernie’s passing in 2015. Friends and family describe their marriage as a love like no other. Bernie placed Dede on a pedestal and Dede returned this devotion with unconditional love for “her Bernie.” Dede supported Bernie’s US Naval career where he served our country for 23 years. The couple would exchange beautiful love letters when Bernie was out to sea that Dede kept all these years. The couple moved to Washington, DC, where Dede worked for Rhode Island Senator Claiborne Pell’s office. Returning to New England, the couple resided in Mystic, since 1977. Dede worked for over 25 years at the Maritime Bookstore at the Mystic Seaport in many capacities including assistant director. She truly loved working with the authors and artists. Upon returning, Dede had an opportunity to see the world by traveling to numerous countries in Europe. Bernie proudly helped her prepare for each trip to ensure she enjoyed every bit of the opportunity, which she did. While retired, she worked with the Noank Baptist Church Thrift Shop, “The Corner Closet.”

Dede will be fondly remembered for her quick wit and sense of humor. She danced in water fountains, wore a birthday cake hat to parties and she always brought fun and cheer wherever she went.

In addition to her beloved husband and her parents, Dede was predeceased by a brother, David Tully. Dede leaves a sister, Nancy Lewis, of Brandon, Fla.; niece Nancy Donovan (Sean) of Valrico, Fla.; nephew and godson Robert Lewis of Brandon, Fla.; nephew and godson Timothy Tully (Cara) of Madison, Miss.; nephew Michael Tully (Sara) of Mendon, Vt.; great-nieces and great-nephews, Caitlyn and Kirstyn Donovan, Connor, Seamus and Aidan Tully, Devin Atwood-Southwick and Lilyanna Tully; a lifelong friend Linda Short (Glen) and their children, a godson Adam, Erin and Evan Short. Dede loved all her fur babies, especially her treasured cat Louie.

Special thanks to close friends, Mark Young, the Gregory family and many neighbors who cared for Dede and enabled her to stay in her home as long as she could. The family would also like to thank the staff at the Academy Point and her private caregivers for their care and compassion for the last months of Dede’s life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mystic and Noank Library, 40 Library Street, Mystic, CT 06355 or the Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russel Road, Newington, CT 06111.
